Purcell’s King Arthur

Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh Festival

20th June 2025, 7:00pm

Gabrieli Consort & Players perform Purcell’s dramatic masterpiece at the 76th Aldeburgh Festival in June 2025.

Purcell’s sublime music and John Dryden’s splendid libretto tell the tale of King Arthur’s attempts to rescue his fiancée, the blind Cornish Princess Emmeline, from the clutches of his arch-enemy, the Saxon King Oswald of Kent.

Gabrieli’s 2019 recording of Purcell’s King Arthur, hailed by Opera magazine as “as accomplished and richly satisfying an experience as anyone could hope for,” won both the Opera category and Recording of the Year at the 2020 BBC Music Magazine Awards.
