Gabrieli presents A Venetian Coronation 1595

Church of St Mary Magdalene, Wrocław

Saturday 5 September 2026

Step inside Venice of 1595: a city of canals, masks and power. In the famous St. Mark’s Basilica, Marino Grimani is crowned Doge, the political head of the Venetian Republic. Such an impressive ceremony called for equally impressive music.

Marino Grimani’s love of ceremony and state festivals fuelled an extraordinary musical bounty during his reign and formed the background to the musical riches of the period, especially to the works of Giovanni Gabrieli. For one evening, the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Szewska Street will be transformed with the power of music into St Mark’s Basilica. With cornetts, sackbuts and an all-male consort, Paul McCreesh exploits the dazzling polyphony of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli’s music. The theatrical and ceremonious performance is sure to captivate.
