Marking the Christian feast of Ascension is Bach’s oratorio, probably composed for that occasion in 1735 in the wake of earlier pieces celebrating Christmas and Easter: several of its sections were recycled from earlier compositions, while another subsequently found its way into the B minor Mass. As with Bach’s Passions, the piece is led narratively by an Evangelist, in this instance tenor Thomas Walker.
