To close this year’s Martin Randall Travel Music Along the Danube we perform the last three extant symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Written in a miraculous blaze in the summer of 1788, these three works were likely never heard by the composer, who didn’t turn again to the symphonic form before his death in 1791. Nevertheless, the three works form an extraordinary trio, with No.41 presenting a dazzling summation of Mozart’s past, No.39 encapsulating the art of his present, and No.40 vaulting into the future and the music of our own time.
