Matthew Martin A Rose Magnificat
Gabrieli Consort
Paul McCreesh conductor
Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort are renowned for innovative programming of a cappella works which juxtaposes the ancient and the modern, challenging our notions of each. A Rose Magnificat is an inspiring sequence of Marian devotional repertoire that weaves a rich tapestry of antiphons, carols and canticles from the Renaissance to the present day. Great works by Tallis and from the Eton choir book contrast sharply with lush settings from the 20th century, culminating in a virtuosic work for double-choir – commissioned specially for the programme – by British composer Matthew Martin.
