As one of Europe's pre-eminent period instrument ensembles the Gabrieli Consort & Players aim to present music of the highest artistic standards to the widest possible audience through our concerts and recordings.
We also seek to engage with the next generation of music makers through working with young musicians. Our educational initiatives have so far taken on two strands:
- Through innovative educational projects and collaborations we hope to introduce young musicians to the challenges of period technique through practical vocal or instrumental work. This February, we were proud to be involved in our second collaboration with Chetham's Music School in Manchester. Gabrieli principal players and Paul McCreesh coached Chets students and members of the local community in Mendelssohn's Elijah. This culminated in three performances at Chester Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral and St George's Chapel, Windsor. In October 2006, a similar project focused on Haydn's Creation. Following Creation performances in Lancaster and Manchester, members of the Chetham's Chamber Choir joined with Gabrieli Consort forces for our large-scale production at the Barbican and subsequent recording with Deutsche Grammophon.
- By offering a Scholarship for Assistant Artistic Director we hope to aid young conductors interested in historical performance. Through practical work in rehearsals, and collaboration on music research and programme planning with Paul McCreesh, the successful candidate has the opportunity to gain experience of the workings of the ensemble and to acquire skills appropriate to a future career as a music director.
