Wratislavia Cantans Festival 2009 09.09.09
Gabrieli’s annual visit to Wrocław, Poland is underway.
On Tuesday night, 8 September, the Gabrieli Consort, directed by Paul McCreesh and Agnieszka Franków-Żelazny, performed their first concert this season at the Wratislavia Cantans Festival based in Wrocław, Poland. The concert took place in St Mary’s Church in Bielawa and featured choral works by Elgar, Howells, and Vaughan Williams, and the Polish composer, Paweł Łukaszewski. The Gabrieli Consort were joined by the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, with which they have collaborated on several occasions this summer including the widely praised BBC Proms performance of Haydn’s Creation. Wednesday 9 September they perform the same choral programme at the St Andrew Bobola Church in Milicz and on 10 September they can be heard in Wrocław at the magnificent University Church.
In keeping with the Festival’s commitment to the oratorio repertoire, this Sunday afternoon, 13 September, Gabrieli Consort & Players perform Handel’s Theodora in the St Mary Magdalane Church in Wrocław. Paul McCreesh describes this oratorio as, “Simply one of the most sublime pieces of 18th century music. In Theodora you find music of extraordinary pathos and passion. These are three hours of the most glorious music Handel ever penned.” The soloists are Renata Pokupic (Theodora), Anna Stephany (Irene), Iestyn Davis (Didymus), John Mark Ainsley (Septimius), Simon Kirkbride (Valens), and Richard Rowntree (Messenger).
