The departing of loved ones has occasioned some of the most magnificent music, especially within the choral tradition. Following in the footsteps of the Gabrieli Consort’s acclaimed recordings The Road to Paradise and A Spotless Rose, this new a cappella programme, Songs of Farewell, contrasts music of mourning and consolation from the ancient to modern. It features extraordinarily beautiful and uplifting repertoire, with works ranging from the moving simplicity of the English burial sentences to Herbert Howells’ sublime and ecstatic Requiem.
