The serpent was invented in 1590 by Edmé Guillaume, a canon of Auxerre Cathedral in France. Its purpose was to support and accompany chanting male voices. The instrument is an 8’ conical tube carved from wood, nut and fruit woods being most common, although softwood such as poplar were sometimes use

In August 2011, Gabrieli will be recording Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Elijah, to be released in September 2012 on Paul McCreesh’s own record label. The recording will follow Gabrieli’s performance of the work at the Royal Albert Hall on 28 August as part of the BBC Proms 2011 season.
