Handel in Italy, London

St. John's Smith Square

28 March 2017, 7.30pm

This spring we’re delighted to return to St. John’s Smith Square for a revival of our programme ‘Handel in Italy’.

Though we often claim Handel for England, as a young man he lived and worked for four years in Italy, and this formative time produced some of his most virtuosic and enduring works. Handel in Italy presents a snapshot of this chapter in the composer’s life, juxtaposing his well-known setting of Dixit Dominus with a gloriously virtuosic solo cantata Donna che in ciel, a plea to the Virgin Mary to save Rome from natural disaster. And the stage is set with Archangelo Corelli’s masterful Concerto Gross in D – a work il caro Sassone would have known well from his own time in Rome.

Corelli Concerto Grosso in D Op. 6 No. 4
Handel Donna che in ciel, HWV 233
Handel Dixit Dominus, HWV 232

Gillian Webster, soprano
