Celebrating the music of Britten and Purcell, Three Odes for St. Cecilia is a concert of works written in praise of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, by two of Britain’s finest composers. Purcell’s intimate early masterpiece Welcome to all the pleasures will be contrasted with his most extrovert ode Hail, Bright Cecilia for seven solo voices and full baroque orchestra. Britten’s music was hugely indebted to Purcell’s style and his Hymn to Saint Cecilia completes the programme. The result is, in McCreesh’s own words, “a most ravishingly beautiful programme….”
