Wratislavia Cantans Festival
Gabrieli Consort & Players are associated artists of the Wratislavia Cantans Festival in Wrocław, Poland, with whom they create many of their programmes and have developed many choral projects with the city's acclaimed Wrocław Philharmonic Choir. The festival, which completed its 45th season in 2010, is based in and around the city of Wrocław in the region of Lower Silesia, southwest Poland. Over the years, Paul McCreesh, Artistic Director of the festival since 2006, and Gabrieli have performed a varied and exciting series of concerts, often collaborating with Polish ensembles and exploring new repertoire. In addition to Gabrieli’s annual residency at the festival, Gabrieli will be assisting the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir in its international development by inviting it to join international tours where possible, to major concert halls in Europe and beyond. In the summer of 2009, the choir joined Gabrieli Consort & Players for concerts of Handel's Jephtha at Salle Pleyel, Paris and the Barbican, London, and Haydn's Creation at the BBC Proms.
2010 Festival
In September 2010, Gabrieli Consort & Players returned to the Wratislavia Cantans Festival for a fifth year in a row with two colossal performances of Berlioz's Grande Messe des Morts. They were joined by the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, a festival orchestra made of Polish musicians and players from Chetham's School of Music, co-directed by Paul McCreesh and Agnieszka Franków-Żelazny, director of the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir.
For those of you who don’t know the Grande Messe des Morts, it is certainly gargantuan (almost 500 performers, 4 brass bands…), but there are many sections of beautiful, quiet a cappella music… I do think this is a spectacular work, and one which I doubt is likely to be performed again for quite a long time! - Paul McCreesh, Artistic Director of Gabrieli and Wratislavia Cantans.
Previous Festivals
The 2009 Festival took place from 5-20 September. On 8, 9, and 10 September the Gabrieli Consort was joined by the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir for a new programme with repertoire from the English and Polish choral traditions. The concert was co-directed by Paul McCreesh and director of the Wrocław Philharmonic Choir, Agnieszka Franków-Żelazny.
